Task

The last assignment in Professor Emily Smith’s course, Poster and Sequence, was to design a set of 3 posters. The topis should be based on personal interests, so I decided immediately to work with animal cruelty.

Challenge

My message, elements, and quotes were clear from the start. However, finding the right approach and style was demanding. First I wanted to shock the viewer and went for horror and gore inspired imagery, but it did not work as posters because it was not “Plakative” (great German term for eye-catcing or striking designs).

Solution

By accident I created a pattern that changed the direction of the project. A pattern symbolizes never-endingness which made perfect sense. I reduced the visuals and made the designs more romantic with round clear forms. The ideas for the rotating posters-in-use came naturally during the creation of the patterns.
